Effective classroom management is central to the teaching and learning process.
From experience, I can say that poor classroom management will raise our stress and burnout rates.
To avoid such stress and burnout, it is pertinent that every teacher has a good Classroom Management strategy.
*Effective Classroom Management starts with us the teachers.*
1. Always have a cheerful disposition.
Yes, a smile will cost you nothing. Always smile. This makes you approachable to the children. They will see you as a friend and this will make them ready and willing to listen to you because they would not want to do anything that displeases you.
Some would say that classroom arrangement and decoration is key, but I ask "Of what use is a beautiful classroom without an amazing teacher?"
Your classroom is a reflection of you- the teacher.
2. Be friendly but firm.
Although we are supposed to have a friendly disposition, we should not forget to be firm. When you become nice and friendly with children, they tend to go overboard. Stand your ground, be strict when necessary. This tells the children that there is a limit or line that should not be crossed.
You should as teachers know when to draw the line.
3. Be active not passive. Teachers are not dull or sluggish people. We are known and loved by many for being active, agile.
When we are active, our lessons will be interesting. We will be able to gain and keep/maintain the children's attention for longer periods of time.
4. Avoid being antsy or impatient towards the children. Remember, you are their new teacher. It will take a while for them to get comfortable with you. As they go through this process, patience is required on your part.
5. Be alert/watchful. The new session has begun. So far in your classroom, have you observed the disruptive, the shy, and the outgoing children?
When you do this, it becomes easier to plan and implement your strategies.
*Effective Classroom Management begins with you*
