It is no secret that teachers have taken on so many roles besides teaching- decorator, mother, father, doctor, photographer, clown, counselor, etc.
Should we add graphic designer to it? Well, that is fitting considering that so many teachers are already doing this.
How is graphic design being used in education presently?
1. Graphics are used heavily in our textbooks to illustrate concept and theories. For example, the ear, the human body and so many others are illustrated in textbooks using graphics.
2. Graphic design creates a focal point it draws attention to the important part of the work your students are looking at.
For example, a page might be filled with text but when you change a font size, colour and look, you draw attention to that font. Imagine you are teaching action verbs and you are making a worksheet.
You want your students to identify or be able to recognise the verb in the sentence/sentences you have. When you get to the verb, you make it bold, underline it, increase the font size, change the font colour, you draw attention to that particular word.
Yes, graphic design is as simple as that. It can be in form of text. When you design with text you are drawing your students' attention to the important points of your lesson.
3. Graphic design adds value to educational multimedia. Educational multimedia here includes texts, sound, video,animation, etc. So it makes learning, fun, exciting and dynamic.
Therefore, when you create your worksheets, when you create your videos, when you make your workbooks, your textbooks, always remember that the graphic design you are using is meant to pass a message across, they are meant to help the children learn and not the other way around.
In conclusion, graphic designs are an important part of your content creation. No matter how good, how important, how crucial, the points you have in your content are, if you do not have a good graphic design, all your efforts are useless. Yes, a poor graphic design renders your efforts useless.
